Educational support to vulnerable pupils at C S (Catholic School) Alatening
On Tuesday October 26, 2023, we were on the field supporting vulnerable pupils at C S (Catholic School) Alatening within Alatening village in Santa subdivision of Mezam division, Northwest-Cameroon, and the parents to caregivers in attendance of the event were equally sensitized relating gender base issues.
Fri Pamela the head teacher of the school in her welcome speech applauded the initiative as the first to be witness in C S Alatening. She was overwhelmed that the organization made catholic school Alatening a choice. She went further saying this year has recorded the highest number of pupils to 75 since 2017 and a drop in school fee from XAF35000 to XAF15000. It was closely followed with the introduction of staffs and other personalities present at the occasion notably the Fon of Alatening, His Royal Highness Fon Suhfor III.
His Royal Highness Fon Suhfor III expresses gratitude for the kind gesture carried out by BGG to the pupils of Catholic School Alatening by bring school bags, books, pens, pencils, rulers, water bottles and scholarships to orphans. He encourages the good work and said it should not only end at Alatening but should be extended to other communities and schools especially the newly created secondary school in Alatening as well as Presbyterian Primary school.
Highlighted objectives of the organization
Madam Joicelyne a staff of BGG highlighted the objectives of the organization which are geared toward gender equality and promoting women/girls empowerment, addressing social and economic gaps of marginalized and underprivileged women and girls who are victims of gender-based violence, widows, orphans, victims of conflict such as refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), those excluded from mainstream livelihood, young people unable to afford basic education and training.
She went further with the list of interventions carried by the organization such as the training on powder soap production and marketing, Agriculture and poultry farming, capacity building, scholarships, health care assistance and environmental campaigns towards climate mitigation.
A representative of BGG’s founder stated:
Mrs. Stella Mofor is a remarkable woman; her dedication, unwavering commitment, and passion for uplifting the lives of those who are less fortunate are truly inspiring. Today, we unite in support of her vision and her tireless efforts. Our outreach program today focuses on primary school disadvantaged pupils and orphans, at Catholic School Alatening. These young souls face challenges that many of us may never fully comprehend. However, it is through our collective effort, compassion, and generosity that we can make a lasting impact in their lives. Together, we have the power to provide educational opportunities, nurture their dreams, and offer a brighter future. We can bridge the gender gap, provide equal opportunities, and create a more inclusive society for all. As we embark on this journey, our founder Mrs. Stella Mofor encourages the Alatening people to come together as a community, as well as a family to extend helping hands to those in need.
The occasion ended with the sharing of school materials to 75 pupils from primary one to six, scholarships to 11 orphans and testimonies from parents, caregivers and pupils who have benefited from the activity as well as 42 parents lectured on gender base related issues including the Fon of Alatening and 3 teachers.
Challenges encountered throughout project implementation
We have been intervening under serious insecurity characterized by gunshots, abduction of personnel in demand for ransom, and closure of some schools by Non-State Arm Groups (NSAG) thereby retarding the activity and increasing cost.
Due to limited financial resources, we could not intervene in all the schools identified in Alatening village with vulnerable or less privilege pupil, talk less of extending to neighboring communities.
Above all, Catholic Primary School Alatening is an old school, but the structure does not stand the taste of a good learning establishment. The fact that there are no ceilings is a big problem especially during raining seasons as direct noise from rain drops hinders listening, talk less of the classrooms without windows and walls not plastered.
