Presentation of project

Interlocking bricks production even though not a worthy sphere of work for women, is gaining ground in the Northwest region of Cameroon so far as construction is concern. Haven been approached by a few underprivileged women from Santa with zeal to take on apprenticeship in producing the interlocutory bricks, we at BGG found reason with them as they say it won’t only empower them on their personal initiatives but also go a long way to help them easily find jobs as experts in the sphere are in high demand at their localities. Given the plea in early March 2024 from four of this women who were all widows, we embarked not only to raise funds but also establish partnerships which could better serve them. Finally, with a bit of funds in partnership with Green Construction in Santa from 1st to 25th November not only the four women received training but three other women joined them as well as four men giving us a total of eleven persons fully trained and issued certificates on interlocking bricks production.

Presentation of PROJECT

This project relates the mothers of the paternal orphaned children partially sponsored, pregnant teenage girls, and teenage mothers identified during our SPONSORSHIP OF LESS PRIVILEGE ORPHAN CHILDREN, PREGNANT TEENAGE GIRLS, AND TEENAGE MOTHERS THROUGH SCHOOL IN ALATENING VILLAGE (2024/2025) project. On the project as training of underprivileged widows, pregnant teenagers, and teenage mothers, on Vaseline and powder soap production and providing them seed capital, the methodology of training was aligned as:

  • Oral presentation with the help of flip charts
  • Practical production procedure
  • Questions and answers sessions

Thereafter the training, a seed capital of XAF 50,000 was given to each trainee as well as a certificate of completion.

Holiday classes on basic ICT skills for youths in Bamenda City (July to August 2024)

Presentation of project

Haven witness most youths roaming about just around our headquarters in Bamenda during long-term holidays for the past years, we took on the initiative in July 2024 to provide an opportunity of learning something new in ICT to some of these youths that may opt to. Notwithstanding their background provide they can’t afford trainings elsewhere. During long-term holiday periods as it is between June to August each year in Cameroon, the door of our headquarters in Bamenda is from henceforth (July 2024) open to eligible underprivileged boys and girls from age 12 – 25. On starting up this phase of support initiative to youths at the local communities where we serve, about 13 youths (9 girls and 4 boys) were trained on basic ICT skills and at the end they were all issued certificates of completion stating their competence.

Training Mechanism

The training went on for two hours (1pm to 3pm) from Monday to Friday as of 1st July to 31st August 2024, but from next year we will start as early as 1st June. The methodology of training was aligned as:

  • Practical lectures relating computer hardware and software
  • Practical lessons with computer utility software such as file management, backups, antivirus, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and others.
  • Assignments and exams given each lessons to grading and certification.

Overview

The socio-political crisis that had heat the Anglophone regions of Cameroon from late 2016 to date, has brought about enormous loses ranging from human life to property. Given a host of human life lost, many children now room the streets of the northwest region as orphans, pregnant teenagers, teenage mothers, and a host of women as widows. With property lost, schools are the most affected with some haven been completely race down to ashes and lead a host of children into frustration. Bridgender Gap Global (BGG) went to the field (principally within the Northwest region) from September 2023 gathering and processing data relating orphan children, pregnant teenage girls, and teenage mothers out of school as well as less underprivileged widows evolving from the said socio-political crisis. To relate a direct impact, we embarked on a series of projects flagged as BACK TO SCHOOL CAMPAIGN IN THE NORTHWEST REGION OF CAMEROON and within this head, we are:

·Encouraging pregnant teenage girls and teenage mothers to get back to school through advocacy and sponsoreship

·Fully Sponsoring Double orphan children through education

·Paying fee and providing basic school necessities to paternal orphans

Presentation of project

Providing essential school needs such as exercise books, school bags, pens, pencils, chalks, rulers, erasers, sharpeners, water bottles, and school fees to paternal orphans, and additionally with monthly allowances to double orphan children, pregnant teenagers, and teenage mothers.

Presentation of project

Bamenda city is composed of Bamenda I, II, and III, Subdivisions as well as Municipalities dominated by Mankon, Nkwen, and Bamendankwe villages. The City of Bamenda has been greatly hit by the Anglophone crisis within the Northwest and Southwest region of Cameroon since October 2016. Relating the aforementioned, women and girls remain the most vulnerable victims as some lost husbands, source of livelihood, and others as usual haven been naturally underprivileged or marginalised. To this, we’ve been in the field (throughout Bamenda City) relating with the above persons and identifying their difficulties and flagged them all as underprivileged and   marginalised women and girls. On the project as training of underprivileged and marginalised women and girls in Bamenda City on powder soap production and providing them seed capital, the methodology of training was aligned as:

Empowering Fistula Victims

One of Bridgender Gap Global (BGG) aims is to support women and girls suffering with obstetric fistula and above all campaign to  eradicate this preventable and treatable disease.

What is obstetric fistula

Obstetric fistula is one of the most serious and tragic childbirth injuries. It is a hole between the birth canal and bladder or rectum caused by prolonged, obstructed labour (that can often last for six to seven days!!!), without access to timely, high-quality medical treatment. It leaves women leaking urine, faeces or both, and often leads to chronic medical problems, depression, social isolation and deepening poverty

As per the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), “The underlying factors that contribute to women’s and girls’ marginalization – including lack of access to quality health services and education, persistent poverty and gender inequality, child marriage, adolescent pregnancy and failure to protect human rights.

Child birth should be a happy moment for every woman NOT a devastating experience

That is why one of our focus at BGG is to improve gender equity in health, acknowledging that women’s rights to better health is one of the most direct and potent ways to achieve social justice and bring change to whole communities.

Our top priority is to rehabilitate girls and women suffering from obstetric fistula. The “smell of leaking urine, faeces or both, is constant and humiliating, often driving the patients’ family, friends and neighbours away” … and these victims are usually stigmatized, ostracised and very often seen as a cursed to their families and communities. Most of the women are first time mothers in this condition, a condition that leaves most of its victims about 90% with still born babies, not only this but they are usually abandoned by their husbands and families (because they smell) making it difficult for them to secure income or support, thereby deepening their poverty. Their isolation may affect their mental health, resulting in depression, low self-esteem and even suicide.

Gender inequality damages the physical and mental health of millions of girls and women across the globe. (World Health Organisation).

Obstetric fistula is a stark outcome of gender inequalities, human rights denial and poor access to reproductive health services, including maternal and new-born care, and an indication of high levels of maternal death and disability. The psychological harm suffered by its victims make it a form of violence against women as per the definition of Violence Against Women (VAW) by the United Nations Declaration on Elimination of violence against women (1993) as: “… any act of gender based violence that results in physical sexual and psychological harm or suffering to women including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether in public or private life”.

BGG on Empowering Fistula Victims

According to UNFPA, gender based violence undermines the health, dignity, security and autonomy of its victims, yet it remains shrouded in a culture of silence. Victims of violence such as girls involved in child/early marriages can suffer sexual and reproductive health consequences such as obstetric fistula. In Ethiopia, 80% of women (and in some parts of thecountry up to 100%) are mutilated, as a means of women’s loyalty to culture and faith (Haregewoin and Emebet, 2003) and fistula in some cases has been known to be a long-term effect of FGM.

Our goal/overall objective

At Bridgender gap global we are promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, through addressing social and economic gaps of women victims of obstetric fistula in Africa starting in Ethiopia. More specifically, BGG works to:

  • Increase their access to education and training opportunities.
  • Increase awareness and sensitisation against child marriages as a cause of maternal morbidity (fistula) ad increase efforts to keep adolescent girls in school and outlaw child marriages
  • Improve the women’s self-esteem and sense of personal power through counselling
  • Increase their access to and control over economic resources particularly employment opportunities and credit assistances.
  • Educate women about their rights and responsibilities.
  • Increase women’s access to health information and women’s control over their own bodies.
  • Provide psychosocial support mechanisms to these women

Activities: Some of the activities BGG is carrying out include promoting the sales of handmade products by the victims at the Fistula hospital

The women at the fistula hospital carry out various craft activities while undergoing their treatment at the hospitals. This serves as a means of building their capacities in life skills and a source of income for the women. These activities include;

  • Tie & dye/print on fabrics, knitting,
  • Production of paper beads,
  • Embroidery,
  • Weaving with wool and dried grass,
  • Production of post cards….

Thus, they produce a wide variety of beautiful handmade clothing, household and décor items such as scarfs, mufflers, table/chair covers, jewellery, grass woven trays, season greetings cards, carpets…. These products are displayed and sold at the fistula hospital and the income from their sales goes directly to the ladies who produce the items.
